Reviving your lawn after winter

Reviving your lawn after winter

Winter can be harsh on your garden lawn, leaving it looking dull, patchy, and lifeless. With spring on the way it's time to breathe new life into your garden and a good place to start is by giving your lawn some TLC. Here are some tips on how to revive your garden lawn after winter:

Rake your lawn

Before doing anything else, start by raking your lawn thoroughly. This will help to remove any debris, dead leaves, or grass that may have accumulated over the winter months. Raking will also help to aerate the soil and remove any thatch that has built up.

Aerate your lawn

Aeration is an optional but worthwhile step in reviving your garden lawn after winter. This process involves creating small holes in the grass to allow water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the soil more easily. You can use a garden fork or a mechanical aerator to carry out this process.

Reseed bare patches

Winter can leave your lawn with bare patches where the grass has died. Reseeding these areas is essential to ensure that your lawn grows back evenly. Simply scatter your seed over the bare patches. Make sure to water the area regularly until the new grass has grown.

Fertilise your lawn

Fertilising your lawn is crucial to ensure that it gets the nutrients it needs to grow. You can use a lawn fertiliser that is high in nitrogen to promote green growth. Make sure to follow the instructions on the label carefully, as too much fertiliser can burn your grass. For best results, try to find a season specific fertiliser.

Water your lawn

Adequate watering is essential to help your lawn grow back healthy and strong after winter. If we're lucky enough to have substantial dry spells, water your lawn deeply and infrequently. This will encourage the roots of your grass to grow deeper. As we move into summer it's best to water your lawn early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature is cooler to prevent evaporation.

Mow your lawn

Once your lawn has woken up from winter and started to grow back, it's time to begin mowing. Set your lawnmower to a high setting and make sure to cut no more than one-third of the grass blades at a time. This will help to prevent damage to your lawn and promote healthy growth.

Reviving your garden lawn after winter  can take a bit of effort, but the results are well worth it. You can help your lawn grow back strong and healthy, making your garden a beautiful place to relax and enjoy over summer.
