5 Steps to create a stripy lawn

5 Steps to create a stripy lawn

Posted by Lisa Taylor on 8th May 2023

At this time of year our attention turns to making our gardens look as good as possible, and this includes our lawn. For some, the pefect lawn is simply green and healthy, for others it's green, healthy and stripy!

You can create a striped lawn in 5 easy steps:

1.Choose a mower with a rear roller

A mower with a rear roller will create the stripe effect by flattening the grass in the direction of mowing.

2.Adjust the cut height of your mower

Set the mower to cut the grass at a consistent height to achieve a uniform stripe. Remember not to set this too low at the start of the season as this could shock the grass, resulting in temporary white patches.

3.Mow in alternating directions

Start by mowing in one direction, then mow in the opposite direction on the next pass. Repeat this pattern to create a stripy effect.

4.Keep the mower blade sharp

It's important to keep your mower blade sharp. A dull mower blade can create an uneven cut and disrupt the stripe pattern.

5.Mow Regularly

Regular mowing is important to maintain the stripe pattern, as well as to keep the grass healthy. As the season progresses you can reduce the height of the cut, but you can't go too low as the stripes are created by flattening the grass. (Keep in mind that the stripy effect will be more prominent when the grass is long and the sun is shining, as the light will reflect differently off the flat and upright grass blades.)

And that's it! It really is that easy to create a lawn good enough to make your neighbours jealous!
