How to Keep your Lawn Green in Summer

Summer heat can be tough on your lawn, but with the right care, it’s possible to maintain a lush, green outdoor space all season long. A combination of consistent watering, smart mowing, and thoughtful maintenance will help your grass thrive even in high temperatures.
Watering is the most critical part of summer lawn care. Early morning is the best time to water, as it allows moisture to soak into the soil while minimising evaporation. Aim to give your established lawn around 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. A sprinkler system will help deliver this evenly, especially during dry spells. New turf requires a LOT more water, at least double this and twice a day!
When it comes to mowing, a few small adjustments can make a big difference. Raise the height of your mower blades to keep the grass a little longer. Taller blades help shade the soil, reducing moisture loss and encouraging deeper roots. Always keep mower blades sharp to avoid tearing the grass, which can cause stress and brown tips. Similar to watering, it is best to avoid mowing during the hottest parts of the day making early morning or evenings ideal.
Fertilising during summer should be done with care. Choose a slow-release option to prevent burning the grass, and consider a formula that’s slightly higher in potassium, which helps strengthen your lawn against heat and drought stress. If your lawn is already struggling with dry patches, it's best to wait until conditions improve before applying fertiliser.
If weeds are creeping in, a selective weedkiller can be used on established lawns to target common invaders like dandelions or clover without harming the grass. Summer applications can be effective, but only if the lawn is not under stress from drought or heat. Always follow product instructions, and make sure you're little ones or pets aren't on the grass after application.
Finally, keep an eye out for lawn pests and diseases, which are more active in warmer weather. Brown patches, thinning areas, or visible insects like grubs or chinch bugs may indicate a problem. Regular inspection and prompt treatment can prevent minor issues from becoming major headaches.
That’s it! With just a few simple maintenance tasks, you can keep your lawn in tip-top condition all summer long. Whether it’s a space for kids to play or the backdrop to your summer get-togethers, a healthy green lawn makes all the difference.
