Getting Your Lawn Ready for Winter in 3 Easy Steps

Posted by Lisa Pieraccini on 9th Oct 2024

As the days shorten and temperatures begin to drop, it's time to start preparing your lawn for the winter months ahead. A little care and attention now will ensure that your grass stays healthy and strong throughout the colder months. It will be ready to ‘spring’ into action next year!

Clear Fallen Leaves

Before the cold sets in, it's important to clear away any leaves, branches, or other debris that may have accumulated on your lawn. Fallen leaves can block sun light and create damp areas, which may lead to diseases or fungus growth.

Its important to rake after leaves have fallen in autumn but it’s also worth doing this task a couple of times a month from November to March, to ensure the grass gets enough air and light.

Mow before the frost

You should start to reduce the frequency of mowing in September – but don’t stop entirely. Set your mower to the highest setting and aim to keep your lawn at a healthy height of around 2.5 – 3 inches. Your grass won’t be growing as vigorously now, and you should aim to get your last cut in around the end of October to early November. The key is to mow just before the first frost, which is when the grass goes dormant for winter.

Apply Seasonal Fertiliser

Autumn is the perfect time to apply one last application of fertiliser for the season. There are lots of generic fertilisers available and most offer a slow-release, nitrogen rich blend that helps to nourish the grass before winter dormancy. The nutrients promote deep root growth, ensuring the grass has enough reserves to stay healthy throughout the colder months.

Taking care of your lawn now means less work and a greener, healthier lawn once the warms weather returns!
