5 Summer gardening tasks

Watering
As temperatures rise during the summer, it's important to ensure that your plants receive enough water to stay hydrated. Water deeply and regularly, preferably in the early morning or evening to minimize evaporation. This includes your lawn, especially if it has just been laid.
Weeding
Summer is a time when weeds tend to flourish. Spend time each week pulling out weeds from your garden beds, lawn, and pathways to prevent them from competing with your plants for nutrients and water. Weeds even turn up in areas covered with decorative aggregates. The good news is these are typically surface weeds and can be removed easily.
Mulching
Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or straw, around your plants. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature, which is especially beneficial during the hot summer months when rain can be a bit scarce.
Pruning and deadheading
Trim back any dead or damaged branches from trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. Also, regularly deadhead spent flowers to encourage new blooms and prolong the flowering season.
Fertilising
Provide nutrients to your plants by applying a slow-release fertiliser or organic compost. This will support their growth and ensure they have the necessary resources to thrive during the summer months. Your lawn will benefit from a seasonal fertiliser or a slow release all year-round turf hardener to keep it nourished and green.
Most of the hard work for garden upkeep should have been completed in spring, leaving you with small tasks over summer. Completed regularly these tasks should take no time at all and leave you plenty of time to simply enjoy your garden!
